In the months of February of 2018, we did follow a free webinar from Piet Vannoppen about “A worry free financial future”. The webinar talked about the poor financial performance of the retail investor and high fees of the banks. This leads to a skinny savings pig….

The bottom line is you better start learning how to trade the markets and do IT yourself. So the webinar ended with an invitation to attend a 2 day course in June. So we subscribed to attend the course and here’s our reflection…

What did I learn during the 2 day Course ?

Around 70 interested people attended the course “Get the Basics Right !” Almost 10 people never traded stocks. As attendee of the course you could bring along a partner or a friend.

As everyone signed a disclaimer document not to copy nor publish content of the course. The disclaimer also denied any accountability or responsibility as investment advice and can only be considered a trainng course. So I won’t reveal details of the course in this blog post.

The first day was mainly spend on getting an introduction to the options investing basics. After some history about how he got his knowledge about options investing, Piet described why most retail investors are struggling. Stockcharts websites were provided as well a brief explanation of technical and fundamental analysis was given.

After doing a detailed explanation of what a CALL and PUT option is, Piet explains his first options investing strategy. He explains the technical indicators that he uses. By using the NIKE chart and options price table, he explains the mechanism of the options trade strategy. Around 15.30 the stock market opened and Piet executes the first trading strategy live in the stock market with the ticker NKE. The day ends with more examples and results of this strategy.

The second day Piet explains two options strategies. With examples he demonstrates the mechanics of each strategy and the reasons why. Then an earnings options strategy is explained in detail. The day ends with a 4th options swing trade strategy and this strategy is explained with the chart of Caterpillar for a 1 year period. (ticker CAT)

The day ends with a performance review of some students of Piet’s Mentoring Program. Some students trade only an iron condor strategy and others apply a more conservative swing trading strategy. All results show double digits % performance.

What are my Options Investing Results so far ?

In May 2017 I did start with options investing. Here I list out the past blog posts of my options investing journey :

  1. My Decision (May 2017) : Why I decide to learn Options Investing ?
  2. Getting Started (July 2017) : Options Investing : My Learning Track Update
  3. Learning the Basics (October 2017) : Options Learning Update : Building the Options Trader Mindset
  4. Strategy Development Small Account (March 2018) : Options Learning Update : Strategy Development Small Account

Here are the cash flow results so far for the two portfolios where I started to use options investing.

  • My own portfolio results : 2017 : 1049,85$ and 2018 : 282,18$
  • My Mom’s portfolio results : 2018 : 591,48$

So in total after 1 year we have almost 2000$ cash flow generated out of the stock market with limited options investing knowledge.

Final words

One of the main reasons why investors do not achieve results, is their lack of knowledge. Remember if you study and improve your knowledge, you need to practice this knowledge. Do not expect immediately a home run trade but execute step by step and learn from your mistakes.

An interesting little book that can help you is “Hoe ook jij Geld verdient met Opties” from Piet Vannoppen. It is written in Dutch and contains all the basics you need. ISBN 978-90-827663-0-1. If you are English speaking, I can recommend the book “Trading Options with an Edge” that I bought recently of Dr. Russell Richards. ISBN 978-1-5245-3819-4

My goal is to learn a skill for the rest of my life and learn different strategies how to grow my money. I did learn a few new strategies during this course. If you don’t know anything about options investing, we can recommend you this course as a start but don’t expect to start on Monday with the knowledge you have been exposed to. You will need to study a lot more…I can guarantee you !

When was the last time you took a day vacation and sacrificed a Saturday all day to learn a skill that grows your money? Keep investing in your knowledge and results will follow. We will post our future results here on the blog.

Thanks for following us on Twitter and Facebook and reading this blog post. We end with a quote as always.
