One of the 2019 Travel objectives is our honeymoon that we delayed for several reasons and years now. At the time that you read this blogpost, myself and Mrs Dividendcake are enjoying our honeymoon in one of the following islands. The only travel booking condition that Mrs Dividendcake has given to me, was “Please book our honeymoon on a romantic island”.

So if you type into Google “which honeymoon destination is the best”, you get 12o million results. So if you type into Google “which honeymoon island is the best”, you get 107 million results. Every travel agency or website has their opinion on what location is the best.

A honeymoon is the perfect fuel to start a never-ending life of Love. I don’t understand the people who don’t do a honeymoon. Who does not want a honeymoon where the sand is swept away from beneath you by the waves that kiss your feet, or one where you are surrounded by natures green canopy while you stand hand in hand with your soul mate!

Check out my shortlist of five honeymoon destinations in the world that I selected.

Destination 1 : St. Lucia

If you’re thinking a Caribbean honeymoon sounds just about perfect to celebrate your new marriage, there are lots of island destinations to choose from. But one of the 2019 absolute favorites is St. Lucia, especially if you’re looking for top-notch resorts and lots of fun things to do with your partner. From hiking up the Piton mountains together to bathing in the Toraille Waterfall and sipping cocktails on the beach, this island has a lot to offer couples in search of effortless romance. Here are the top 3 reasons why I would pick St. Lucia.

1. There’s the best view in the Caribbean

Few coastlines have been photographed more than St Lucia’s spectacular south-west corner. The Pitons, a pair of jagged volcanic peaks that planes must skirt around to touch down at the island’s international airport, are instantly recognisable – but up close they look unreal, like Hollywood’s CGI wizards have been let loose. Try to find accommodation nearby – it’s not a view you’ll grow tired of.

2. There are fine sandy beaches

Despite the island’s volcanic origins, the sand on its beaches is golden. Anse Piton is a contender for the best in the entire Caribbean – never mind that they’ve cheated somewhat by importing fine white grains from Guyana. It is also, like all St Lucia’s beaches, open to the public (so you needn’t be a guest at Sugar Beach to enjoy the view). There are more gorgeous beaches along the west coast, such as Anse Chastanet (home to a hotel of the same name) and Anse Cochon. Even further north, Marigot Bay is a picturesque natural harbour that attracts posh yachts and has a small isthmus of sand, while mile-long Reduit Beach, beside the tourist town of Rodney Bay, is the biggest, and most popular, on the whole island.

3. Life under the water

I love snorkelling. Inspired by Blue Planet II? The reef at Anse Piton, close to the surface so ideal for snorkelling, is home to a wealth of watery wonders. Expect to see sinister trumpetfish hoping to ambush tiddlers, shoals of little squid, slippery moray eels lurking within the coral, gormless looking parrotfish, and scores of curious needlefish. On the opposite side of Petit Piton, and just north of the island’s former capital, Soufriere, Scuba St Lucia leads dives to a dozen spots on the south-west coast. Highlights include the wreck of the freighter Lesleen M, which sits 30 feet below the surface; night dives, when crustaceans and octopuses come out to play; and trips to Turtle Reef, where hawksbill and green turtles go to graze on seagrass. Official website of St. Lucia is here.

Destination 2 : Bora Bora

How can a list start without the mention of the Bora Bora Islands? Bora Bora Islands outscore every other destination by offering a beautiful, befitting ambiance and mood. Turquoise lagoons, clear deep blue waters, secluded bungalows to stay and sumptuous food -what more can you ask for?

Bora Bora is known as the Pearl of the Pacific. The small island of Bora Bora (just about 6 miles long and a little more than 2 miles wide) overflows with beauty. A dormant volcano rises up at its center and fans out into lush jungle before spilling into an aquamarine lagoon.

In fact, author James Michener, who wrote “Tales of the South Pacific,” called Bora Bora “the most beautiful island in the world.” The 18th-century British explorer James Cook even coined it as the “Pearl of the Pacific.” The very definition of a tropical getaway, blissful Bora Bora abounds with luxurious resorts, sunny skies, warm waters, and friendly locals.

And as you might’ve already guessed, the main industry on this petite island in French Polynesia and its swarm of tiny motu (islands) is tourism. To that end, you can snorkel, explore Vaitape (Bora Bora’s main port), hike Mount Otemanu and more.  If you have plans to visit the island, be prepared to either walk, or rent a bike or car, because there is no public transport in Bora Bora. The only thing that can be considered public transport is a bus called Le Truck, which conducts two-hour tours around the island.

Dangerous land animals do not exist in this tropical paradise. You can take a nap on the beach and the only snake you will encounter will be in your dreams. Ok, there are no snakes in Bora Bora but another danger is waiting for you just around the corner…. Coconuts! Yes, CO-CO-NUTS! To be precise, falling coconuts.

Imagine, that one green coconut can weigh up to two kilos (4.5 lbs). Also, take into account that palm trees are about 30 meters (98 feet) high and the speed a coconut falls is around 85 km/h (53 mph), so you can be hit by a force that is equivalent to a tonne! Not fun at all.

Would that stop me for choosing Bora Bora Islands ? I don’t think so…

Destination 3 : The Maldives

The Maldives have topped honeymooners’ wish lists for years, in no small part thanks to the many celebrities who have vacationed there with their own significant others—Victoria Beckham, Mariah Carey, Kate Moss, Beyoncé and even Kate Middleton have all visited the archipelago for romantic trips. (Remember when Kim Kardashian famously lost a $75,000 diamond earring there after then-fiancé Kris Humphries threw her into the water? That was in the Maldives). With white sand beaches, pristine waters, and your in-laws approximately nine thousand miles away, this is a top-notch honeymoon destination.

“Why Maldives is still the most popular Honeymoon destination?” according to the blog Alpha Maledives

The definition of the Maldives: An exotic and romantic destination of more than 1000 coral islands ideal for newlyweds and all other lovers of life. Honeymoons and the Maldives go hand in hand. You will be hard pressed to find a more exotic or romantic destination than this country island. Here are several reasons why.halaveli-maldives-aerial-5

1. The Position of the Maldives

The Maldives universally remains a top honeymoon destination due to its unique setting as a special piece of paradise in the middle of the warm Indian Ocean. For most people it is far, far away from the maddening crowd, where you escape from the rush of the wedding and take time to rest, destress and enjoy one another.

As the Maldives has so many islands, honeymooners are guaranteed to find something to suit their particular personalities and desires. If they want peace and tranquillity, they are sure to find it on any one of the private island resorts. They may travel a little further, be a little more remote, but in return they’ll get that ‘lost on a desert island’ kind of feeling. There is no stress here.

2. The Setting of the Maldives

When you picture romance, the idea of spectacular sunsets enjoyed from pristine beaches comes to mind. The Maldives is blessed in abundance with these two assets. There are not enough adjectives to describe the beauty of this island country. It’s in the Indian Ocean – straddling the equator, ensuring long hot languid days along pristine beaches. There are endless breath-taking natural coral reefs, an exotic display of marine life and spectacular turquoise lagoons. Exploring the islands will take a lifetime – there are so many of them. As a honeymoon setting, it doesn’t get better than this.

3. Activity Options in the Maldives

The variety of resort options is surprisingly large – there are lagoon resorts, private islands, adult only alternatives, family friendly hotels and some resorts that may offer all the above possibilities in one majestic setting. When booking your honeymoon be sure to explain what you desire – it may be a water villa far from the resort, where seclusion and privacy is paramount – or you may want to be closer to the activity and keen to get out and about to explore the islands. The one may include romantic intimate beach dinners, the other fun visits to underwater night clubs or dancing the night away to Maldivian music. You may be content to swim from your deck, seeing the amazing marine life on your doorstep or join a group on a more remote dive. The couple seeking privacy will enjoy being dropped at a desert island and enjoying a picnic alone on a remote beach. Another couple seeking an adrenaline rush may go for a high speed water activity or kite surfing, a sea-plane ride or kayaking. There is so much to do you are spoiled for choice.

4. The Maldivian Speciality Service

The reputable resorts we recommend in the Maldives provide privacy as privacy is required, discreet service when needed, unobtrusive assistance when called for. Staff are qualified and professional and are there for specialised service. Your honeymoon is once in a lifetime. The top hotels have personal butlers whose aim to ensure all your requirements are met. The idea of being waited on brings with it a feeling of royalty. The Maldives cater for honeymooners in a big way and there are often Honeymoon specials to be had with unique extras such as arriving to chocolates and roses. You can arrange a surprise dinner on the beach for your partner, with the butler serving you from the hotel restaurant. The resorts certainly go out of their way to make your honeymoon memorable.

While many resorts around the world can provide the service, there are only a small handful of warm water islands that can bring you the enchanted setting found in the archipelago of the Maldives, making it a hot honeymoon favourite.

Destination 4 : The North Island – Seychelles Islands

The clash of the two gorgeous destinations – Maldives vs Seychelles for honeymoon – is much like the popular Greek mythological clash between Hera and Aphrodite. It is hard to say for sure as to who, or in this case which destination, is more alluring. And they rightly say, “Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder.” For it has to be your decision, dear readers, to choose Maldives or Seychelles for honeymoon.

To begin with, we have good news. The Indian Ocean islands of Maldives and Seychelles have all the ingredients of a perfect tropical island honeymoon, but each remains to be unique in its own way. And these distinctions are what will be the ones that will help you decide upon a destination for an international honeymoon. You can find a comparison of the two locations on this website.

With its quiet jewel-like islands set amidst impossibly blue waters, Seychelles is mysterious and beckoning all at once. A cluster of 115 islands in the Indian ocean, the most popular islands to stay on are Mahe, Praslin, and La Digue. They are the perfect romantic destinations for an unforgettable honeymoon. The world’s coolest royal couple Prince William and Kate Middleton honeymooned there. You too can indulge yourselves in sun, sand, and surf – and then come away refreshed.

Destination 5 : Mauritius

Let’s be honest. Most honeymoons require little more than pleasant weather and some privacy for the newlywed couple. So if you are the kind of couple who demands a little more action, and likes to travel a little deeper, you should consider another Indian Ocean destination: Mauritius. No matter which activities or hobbies interest you, there is more than enough for you to enjoy together. What kind of couple are you ?

You’re in for a crazy ride. Ride along the rough off-road tracks but take a few short breaks to enjoy the scenery. You can also opt for a slower paced discovery from horseback, by bike or from the golf course.

For nature lovers

Even though Mauritius is an island, let’s not forget that it’s part of Africa. Get ready to explore the surrounding areas, making sure you’ll never want to leave. Take to the water and see the whales and dolphins play around beneath the waves. Put on your aqua gear for further discovery. There is an array of tropical, colorful fish, exciting wrecks, coral reefs and forgotten caves to explore. Float around with scuba gear, go on a glass-bottomed submarine tour or take an underwater sea walk. No matter which one you choose, you’ll wish you could grow some gills and stay forever and ever.

The island is a tropical paradise with mountains, hills and valleys covered with green trees and hidden treasures. So why not see the most beautiful sights of the island together with your significant other on a hiking trip? Make sure you bring a camera. There are several great options for added thrills along the routes and tracks of the island, such as wooden ladders and zip lines, taking this exotic discovery to a new level.

Take a quick stop at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens for an unforgettable display of Mauritius’ flora and walk the incredible gardens.

For history and culture enthusiasts

There are several historical highlights scattered around the island that serve as a reminder of the rich religious heritage of the island. A must when you visit, is to take a drive to one of the nearest temples. You can pick and choose from more than fifty of them. As the main religion in the country is Hinduism, several ornate and impressive buildings are erected around the island, either as a place to pray or in honor of the Gods. The main attraction is the Grand Bassin, or Ganga Talao, a crater lake in the heart of Mauritius. This is considered to be the most sacred Hindu place in Mauritius and the main attraction is the temple dedicated to Shiva, Lakshmi, Hanuman and more. Explore the area and see the ornate buildings including the large statue of Shiva, a true piece of art.

Mauritius is the most romantic place on the world for honeymoon. This dreamy island nation in the Indian Ocean pairs white sand beaches, rare birds and volcanic mountains with a warm mix of French, Indian and Creole cultures. Take a catamaran for snorkeling and enjoy a barbecue in the stylish 19th-century Governor’s House for a romantic dinner.
